Swann Dangerfield has a rich history that dates back to 1802, when the prominent Alexandria attorney, Thomas Swann, built his 2 story home at the southeastern corners of South Columbia and Prince Streets. In 1833 the property was bought by a successful shipping merchant and importer, Henry Daingerfield, who is believed to have been responsible for the remodeling that was to take place over the next 50 years. At the time a grand ballroom and third floor were added to the structure. The home remained in the family of the Daingerfield's until the late 19th century, when it was purchased by Saint Mary's Academy, and 3 stories were added to the structure. The boarding school added a new wing that faced South Columbus. The boarding school was then sold to Alexandria Hospital, who used it for housing students of their School of Nursing. It wasn't until the late 1970's that the Swann Daingerfield house was returned to its original use as a private residence, with the wings being converted into condominiums.
