Ashburn Homes for Sale

Ashburn is home to quaint houses and historical attractions, and is situated close to Washington D.C., making houses for sale in Ashburn, VA, the perfect choice for commuters and households of all ages. Ashburn is located in Loudoun County and has a dense suburban feel and some of the most highly rated public schools in the state.

Ashburn's History

Ashburn dates back as far as the 1800s and was once known as Old Farmwell and linked to a plantation of 1,236 acres. In 1841, 580 acres of Old Farmwell was bought by a Quaker lawyer named John Janney, who almost became Vice President of the United States. Janney renamed the plot to Ashburn Farm in 1870. It is home to historical sites including Belmont Manor House and Janelia Farm.

Ashburn Village is a fine example of a commercial center from the late 19th century, set into a rural landscape. It created many corridors of transportation, such as Oc Road, which was one of the main roads for tobacco transport. It was also linked to the Loudoun, Alexandria and Hampshire Railroad in 1860. Ashburn was also the main center of the milk industry in Loudoun County. Many of the tracts of land have been developed into suburban communities in today’s Ashburn real estate market, with Ashburn Village and its central core remaining intact over the decades.

Living In Ashburn

Ashburn is rich in its scenic beauty, local lore and cultural diversity. It is one of the 50 best places to live in the U.S. according to Money magazine, which bases its rankings on factors such as diversity, cost of living, employment and safety. Ashburn came in at No. 11 on the latest list, with a population of 55,000; a 7.7 percent unemployment rate; and an average household income of $126,000.

The Ashburn real estate market is home to many townhomes, single-family homes and apartment complexes. More than 55 percent of Ashburn homes were built between 1970 and 1999. Forty-two percent of Ashburn homes were built in the year 2000 and later. Loudoun County History

Ashburn is just one of the many areas of Loudoun County with a long history. Before the land was chartered, it was inhabited in the 1600s by the Sioux, Iroquois, Algonquin and Piscataway Indian tribes. The county itself was granted to seven noblemen by England's King Charles II in 1649.

In 1722, a treaty was signed between the Iroquois and Lt. Governor Spotswood, which agreed that the Blue Ridge Mountains would act as a buffer zone between western Indian territory and eastern white settlements. In 1723, the future Loudoun saw many European settlers moving in. There were huge tracts in the east, west and south that were owned by English aristocrats who owned enslaved people. The northern area was settled by German-American farmers and Quakers.

Today's Route 50 was once an old Indian trail and on it was a tavern for travelers, now known as the Red Fox Inn. Route 7 was once Vestal's Gap Road, traveled by a young George Washington while he was a scout in the military that engaged in the French and Indian War.

Between 1725 and 1730, Loudoun was being settled. It was in 1757 when settlers asked the government of Virginia to make a new county. This is when Loudoun County was born, named after John Campbell, a commander in the British army.

Agriculture was the way of life in Loudoun County for more than two centuries. It was in the early 1960s when things started to change once Dulles Airport was built. This attracted new households, workers and businesses to the area. Loudoun County and all its communities are known for their rich history, beautiful scenery, safe neighborhoods, and diversity.

Real Estate Taxes

The property taxes in Northern Virginia can vary depending on what county and city you are in. There are situations where you may pay both city and county taxes. Property taxes for Ashburn real estate tend to fall around the national average of 1.08 percent.
