Chantilly's History
During the 1700s, Chantilly was home to several colonial plantations. One of these was the Sully Plantation, which Richard Bland Lee I built and is now the Sully Historic Site. Another plantation was George Richard Lee Turberville's “Leeton Grove.” It was originally a plantation measuring more than 5,000 acres, and the main farmhouse still stands on Walney Road.
Lee Turberville's daughter, Cornelia Lee Turberville Stuart, inherited part of Leeton Grove in 1817 and constructed the Chantilly Plantation with her husband, Charles Calvert Stuart. It is after the Chantilly Plantation that the city is named.
After the Civil War, Cornelia Stuart sold off most of the estate because she had fallen into a huge amount of debt. The land's development continued throughout the 19th century to create a village, especially after Little River Turnpike's construction.
Another major phase of the city's development took place in the 1980s, which is when Chantilly became an outer suburb of Washington DC. Construction companies filled in the farmland south of Washington Dulles International Airport to create commercial areas and residential subdivisions.
