Ravensworth Farm Homes for Sale - Springfield, VA
Ravensworth Farm is a welcoming residential neighborhood of single-family homes in Springfield, VA, that is populated by 87 percent homeowners with an average resident age of 54. The Ravensworth name was originally used to describe an 18th-century plantation house in Fairfax County near Annandale. It was built in 1796 as the residence of William Fitzhugh and his family and heirs. He purchased the land grant in 1685, which was followed by a colonial settlement, the seat of early government, civil war, economic expansion, slavery, early tobacco plantations, and the rise and then the decline of family farms to make room for urban development. All of this took place right next door to our nation’s capital and involved people, places and events that were both obscure and famous.
From Zero Population to Hundreds of Thousands
Ravensworth was once Fairfax County’s largest colonial land grant at 24,112 acres (37.7 square miles), which is approximately half the total area of Washington D.C. The property there was constantly being carved into smaller parcels via inheritances, sales, and later by subdivisions. The expanse of forest that was once uncharted became a plantation followed by a succession of consistently smaller plantations, and then farms. Today, it’s been transformed into thousands of homes, businesses and government centers, taking it from zero population in 1685 to hundreds of thousands of people today.
