The Ravensworth name was originally used to describe an 18th-century plantation house in Fairfax County near Annandale. It was built in 1796 as the residence of William Fitzhugh and his family and heirs. Ravensworth was once Fairfax County’s largest colonial land grant at 24,112 acres (37.7 square miles), which is approximately half the total area of Washington D.C. The property there was constantly being carved into smaller parcels via inheritances, sales, and later by subdivisions. The expanse of forest that was once uncharted became a plantation followed by a succession of consistently smaller plantations, and then farms.
