The Alexandria African American Heritage Park is a great spot for nature lovers who are looking to escape the hustle and bustle of the city. The park offers walking trails that wind around a small creek that is home to beavers, crayfish, painted turtles, and mallards, as well as take you to the 19th century African American cemetery that serves as the final resting place for 21 people, six of which are known and have headstones in place.
African American Heritage Park Features
The park’s focal point is a bronzed sculpture that depicts a group of trees called “Truths That Rise From the Roots Remembered,” which recognizes African American contributions to the growth of Alexandria. Several small contributions are located throughout the park and commemorate the people buried here, as well as historic African American neighborhoods. The sculptures were created by Jerome Meadows, a prominent local artist and sculptor.
Also located on the park’s grounds is a satellite of the Alexandria Black History Resource Center. Unlike most parks in the area, the Alexandria African American Heritage Park does not have a playground area for children. However, the park is currently undergoing renovations and a play area may be added in future.
