Fairfax Station Railroad Museum was created after Fairfax Station was completed in 1854 and was a vital stop during the Civil War. Clara Barton helped organize loads of medical supplies and wounded soldiers into and out of Fairfax Station. This railway stop played a large role in the local economy.
Fairfax Station Railroad Museum History
Sadly, as more modern forms of transportation took over, this railway depot eventually closed. Scheduled for demolition in 1973, the Friends of the Fairfax Station worked hard to preserve the old building. Their efforts paid off and the Southern Railway donated the building. Local families donated land nearby to relocate the old depot.
With the help of local groups and high school students, the depot was restored and turned into the museum it is today. Open since 1988, the Fairfax Station Railroad Museum is a great family destination. The Fairfax Station Railroad Museum is open every Sunday afternoon from 1-4. Admission fees are affordable at $5.00 or less.
Train Exhibits
Model train enthusiasts love visiting Fairfax Station Railroad Museum when they host model train displays. There is normally one such exhibit each month. Model sizes vary from T-scale to G-scale. The month of May is filled with a wide variety of model train exhibits. However, the most popular event is the Holiday Train Show that the Station hosts the first week of December.
