Gravelly Point Park is located in Arlington VA along the basin of the Potomac River. It is a small park with a football field, several picnic tables scattered around the park, and a lone running/walking/biking trail (part of the Mount Vernon Trail) situated along the water. However, the main draw of Gravelly Point Park has always been the amazing views of the aircraft landing at nearby Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport that it offers.
Gravelly Point Park in Arlington VA – Great for Airplane Watching!
Planes are constantly taking off and landing at the airport, which means aircraft are frequently directly overhead. In fact, the speeding planes are just a few hundred feet above you, which makes the experience even more thrilling. Gravelly Park is definitely worth visiting for anyone who is fascinated with airplanes. Take a picnic lunch and a blanket and you could easily spend hours here.
The park also offers a glimpse of the dome of the Jefferson Memorial and the Washington Monument, as well as boaters and skiers on the river.
On another interesting note, Gravelly Point Park still has payphones, which are quickly disappearing, onsite. This may be one of your last chances to show younger children how we communicated before cell phones!
