Located at 118 North Washington St. in Old Town, Historic Christ Church was first known as the “Church in the Woods” because it was built so far from town. Today, Historic Christ Church, which was built between 1767 and 1773, is no longer the “Church in the Woods”, but a beautiful, well preserved piece of history that stands in the middle of Old Town.
In the more than 300 years Historic Christ Church has been standing, it has established a rich history that includes withstanding the ravages of the Civil War, having a number of prominent attendees, such as George Washington and Robert E. Lee, and serving as the final resting place for 34 Confederate prisoners who died in prison camps during the Civil War.

Tours of Historic Christ Church are available and offer a closer look into its unique past, as well as take you into the cemetery, where Alexandria’s oldest legible tombstone is located. Although a number of tombstones have been lost or destroyed over time, many can still be seen at Historic Christ Church, including several that feature elaborate designs and/ or inscriptions.
While Historic Christ Church’s congregation of more than 2,000 members encourages visitors to attend services, they are content with the fact that the church remains a significant part of Alexandria’s history and welcomes thousands of people who simply come to learn about its history.
