Just under 18 miles long, fully paved, and winding alongside the Potomac River, the Mount Vernon Trail runs from Theodore Roosevelt Island all the way to George Washington’s former home, Mount Vernon.

Mount Vernon Trail Activities

Perfect for walking, running, and biking, the mostly shaded Mount Vernon Trail connects to several regional trails as it takes users through wooded areas, neighborhoods, wetlands, and more. In addition to restrooms, water fountains, and waterfront benches strategically located along the trail, there are several points of interest, including Old Town Alexandria, Gravelly Point, and Arlington Cemetery. Of course, you also get great views of several monuments. As an added bonus, there are a number of bike racks located along the trail, especially in the Old Town area, so you can easily stop and take a shopping break or grab a quick bite to eat. Be aware that Mount Vernon Trail is a bit narrow in spots and it can be crowded at times, but it is definitely worth visiting.
