For the fixer-upper my wife and I just bought, we got a great sale on granite and cabinets at Home Depot, bought new appliances, and had a handyman/carpenter cut out part of a wall to install a granite island. We also had new floor tile put in. We had everything done in the kitchen for less than $10,000. For the bathrooms, we had new floor tile installed and new vanities put in, but we chose not to remodel the baths/showers, as they were in good condition. Total cost for the three bathrooms we remodeled was about $2,500. Eventually, we might do the baths as well, but each bathroom now "shows" to visitors as a remodeled bathroom.
Deciding to Be Your Own General Contractor Can Save You Some Money
A lot of homeowners hire a contractor to manage their entire remodeling job, which adds to their home renovation costs. However, selecting workers, hiring them individually, and purchasing your materials on your own can save you a lot of money in the long run. Does it require some extra work and patience? Absolutely, but the savings can be well worth it.
Your Kitchen Renovation
Kitchens can be big money pits if you allow them to be. If you watch HGTV, you’ll often see kitchen remodels that cost upwards of $30,000. However, if you look for the right deals and hire workers separately, you can save bundles of money.
When it comes to kitchens, another tip that can save you money on your home renovation costs is to consider having your cabinets resurfaced and repainted instead of replaced. This generally only works for cabinets that are made of real wood, but it can save you thousands.
