Advantages of Living in a Townhouse in Northern Virginia

- With townhome living, there’s not much yard maintenance – Often, you have just a small, enclosed patio area in the back, or a small backyard to maintain. Many HOAs (homeowners association) take care of lawn maintenance in the front yards of townhome communities.

- On average, townhomes are cheaper than single family homes in Northern Virginia. You’re often able to get a lot more square footage and upgrades for your money.

- Your neighbors are all pretty close by, which is great for meeting and getting to know more people.

Disadvantages of Townhome Living

- With townhome living, you don’t have as much land as you usually get with a single family home.

- Since you have common walls, townhomes don’t have as much privacy as detached homes.

- If you want to live in a community that doesn’t have an HOA, this will count out most townhome communities for you, as most of them have HOAs. However, there are many older duplexes and row houses in Northern Virginia (i.e. Alexandria and Arlington) that are not part of HOAs. With duplexes, you often get bigger yards as well.
