The Albert Einstein Memorial is a 21 foot tall bronze statue that was unveiled on the centennial of Albert Einstein's birthday by the National Academy of Sciences in Washington, DC. Located in the southwest corner on the school grounds, this 4 ton statue sits on a three-step bench made from white granite from Mount Airy, North Carolina. A beautiful Holly and Elm grove surrounds the sitting Einstein.
Albert Einstein Memorial Symbolism
As depicted by the Albert Einstein Memorial, Einstein is holding a paper in his left hand. This paper shows his three major scientific contributions: the general theory of relativity, the equivalence of matter and energy, and the photoelectric effect. There are three quotes from Einstein engraved on the granite bench at the Albert Einstein Memorial: "Joy and amazement of the beauty and grandeur of this world which man can just form a faint notion...", "As long as I have any choice in the matter, I shall live only in a country where civil liberty, tolerance, and equality of all citizens before the law prevail", "The right to search for truth implies also a duty: one must not conceal any part of what one has recognized to be true."
At the base of the Albert Einstein Memorial is a 28-foot section of emerald pearl granite. This section, a gift from Larvik, Norway, has over 2,700 metal studs embedded into its surface. These studs represent the planets, moon, sun, stars, and whatever else was in the night sky on the date of the dedication. Robert Berks, the sculptor of this marvelous bronze statue, worked from a bust he had sculpted when Einstein was alive in 1953.
