Located in the heart of beautiful northern Virginia, The Fairfax Museum & Visitor Center is actually about midway between Washington D.C and the Washington Dulles International Airport. Built in 1873, the Fairfax Elementary School was the very first two-story brick school house in Fairfax County. The Fairfax Museum and visitor center now reside in this renovated old building that is proudly listed in the National Register of Historic Places.
Fairfax Museum Tours
Private tours are available for all age groups, and school tours can be tailored to meet the needs and educational standards for students of all ages. Every second Sunday of the month, the Fairfax Museum and Visitor Center has a new and exciting program to delight guests. These programs help visitors understand the history of the school and the surrounding areas. "The Fairfax Stories" is one of the permanent exhibitions on display in the museum. Exhibits change throughout the year, so visitors should try to visit more than once.
During the sesquicentennial events in 2011, a Dramatization and Reenactment of the Skirmish at Fairfax Courthouse was held. This event was recorded and can be found on YouTube. In 2013, the Mosby's Raid on Fairfax Court House Reenactment and Commemoration drew a crowd of 600. Many other people attended the preview of the recorded film. Other reenactments were held and recorded, and more are always planned for future events.
