From the late 18th century into the early 19th century, Gadsby’s Tavern was the place that Alexandria’s elite met for food, drinks, and fun. Today, you can still sit down at Gadsby’s Tavern and enjoy George Washington’s Favorite (grilled duck), as well as a number of other meals that were first prepared when Gadsby’s Tavern opened in 1789. Meals are served in one of two period decorated Colonial dining rooms, while the staff dresses in period appropriate clothing.

After finishing your delicious meal, it’s time to take a guided tour of the Gadsby’s Tavern Museum. The tour typically takes around an hour and gives you an inside look at how the business operated as both a tavern and hotel in its heyday, back when it was not unusual to see some of the most prominent figures in American history gathered together to enjoy a meal, drink, and cigar.
From visiting the upstairs ballroom where community events, including Jefferson’s Inaugural Ball, were once held to viewing the ice well where ice, which was a precious commodity reserved only for the rich, was stored, there is plenty to see here. As an added bonus, the stories told by the guides provide an insightful look into what life was really like in the 18th century. Located on N. Royal St. in Old Town, Gadsby’s Tavern Museum is definitely a can’t miss stop in Alexandria.
