A Bit Of Local History
Bloomsbury Farm (aka Harris Farm) was a historically significant 18th-century timber-framed house that was built by the Robinson family between 1785 and 1790. It showcased 18th-century construction and decorative elements. Despite being added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2000, the house was demolished in 2014 by Leonard Atkins, a nearby resident who had purchased the property intending to restore it. He justified the demolition due to the building's alleged poor condition and public safety concerns and intended to replace it with a new house that would align with the surrounding modern development's style and value. So, Bloomsbury Farm was removed from the National Register in 2017.
Often called the "Crossroads of the Civil War," Spotsylvania County witnessed four major Civil War battles. Notably, on May 19, 1864, Bloomsbury Farm became the site of the Battle of Harris Farm, which was the final major action of the Battle of Spotsylvania Court House. It ended with the Confederate forces retreating. During the battle, the Bloomsbury farmhouse served as a field hospital, and more than 2,000 soldiers were tragically wounded or killed. In 1901, a monument was erected on the site to honor the fallen soldiers of the 1st Massachusetts Heavy Artillery. Today, Spotsylvania stands as a prominent destination for those interested in exploring Civil War history, offering everything from historic trails to historically preserved battlefields, and numerous other significant landmarks.
