A Little Bit of Local History

Gainesville actually owes its current name to a man named Thomas Brawner Gaines (1814-1856). He was a Welshman who granted the railroad the right of way through his property on one condition. That condition was a bit egotistical and was that the local train depot be named after him. In its early days, Gainesville served as a "changing point" along the Fauquier & Alexandria Turnpike, where stagecoach horses were swapped out for fresh ones. Interestingly, during the colonial era, the town briefly went by two other names: "Middle Grounds," due to its location between Bull Run and Broad Run, and "New Stable," which the town acquired in the early 1800s after a new stable was built to facilitate the exchange of stagecoach horses.

Local Attractions 

The town offers a variety of attractions, which include some interesting local favorites like the Tin Cannon Brewery, Cabela's, and Murlarkey Distillery. In addition, Gainesville has experienced a boom in residential and commercial development since 2000, resulting in six major shopping centers. The largest one is located at the intersection of I-66 and Lee Highway (Route 29), and features big box stores like Best Buy, Target, and Lowe's. Somerset Crossing offers banking and other shops, while the area near US-15 houses popular retailers like Ross, Staples, and Wegmans. The Peterson Companies developed the Promenade at Virginia Gateway, which includes the very popular BJ's Warehouse and Regal Cinemas. 

Also, the Jiffy Lube Live amphitheater in nearby Bristow hosts a diverse range of events, from annual performances by popular artists to music festivals and concerts. With so much to offer, Gainesville residents always have something to enjoy.
