The Arts and Industries Building was built in the mid 1800s by a man named Spencer Fullerton Baird who dreamed of opening a museum to house his vast collection of American artifacts. After much work, and dedication to achieving his goal, the US National Museum was opened in October of 1881. Baird, the second Secretary of the Smithsonian, was thrilled that the museum attracted 167,455 visitors in its first full year of 1882.

Baird would be more than thrilled to know that millions of people have visited the museum - which was eventually renamed The Arts and Industries Building - in its 135 year history. Closed in 2006 for renovations, the museum is scheduled to open sometime in 2016. The Arts and Industries Building has the distinction of being the first museum to open to the public in the United States.
Located on Jefferson Drive in Washington, DC, the castle-like Arts and Industries Building is a major attraction for visitors of all ages. While adults and older children love wandering around looking at the exhibits, young children can't wait to go outdoors and ride on the carousel located in the Mall area just outside the main building.
