Constructed in the early 1850s as a bank at the corner of Lee St. and Prince St., the Athenaeum Alexandria is a beautifully maintained example of Greek Revival architecture. It has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1980 and is easily recognized by the four soaring columns that span the front of the building. Inside, the 24-foot high ceilings of the Athenaeum Alexandria in the main gallery, as well as the exquisite period woodwork, enormous windows, and exposed granite walls, set this building apart from many of the other historical properties in Old Town Alexandra. Behind the building the courtyard garden offers a colorful, yet relaxing spot to spend a few moments.
Present Day Athenaeum Alexandria
Today, the gorgeous building serves as the home of the Northern Virginia Fine Arts Association (NVFAA), as well as an art gallery that showcases the work of outstanding regional artists. Exhibits are changed seven times during the year and incorporate a wide array of art mediums, such as paintings, sculptures, photography, poetry and musical performances, dance recitals, and literary events. In addition, various private events, including weddings, are held at the Athenaeum throughout the year. Though the Athenaeum Alexandria closes for private events, it is open to the public during certain hours.
