Visiting Colvin Run Mill
Built around 1811, the Colvin Run Mill was a revolution in the milling industry. For over fifty years the same family who revolutionized the industry, lived in, and ran the mill. The general store offers guests a rare glimpse of what a store in the 19th century was like: the merchandise ranges from 'penny' candy to stone ground wheat, cornmeal and grits. Visiting the Colvin Run Mill is by tour only. Customized tours are available for all age groups and levels of interest. Visitors should prepare to have their senses dazzled: the gears and giant waterwheel assault the ears and amaze the eyes; touching the stones that actually grind the grain reveals the strength of these massive grinders; the smell and taste of burning mill stones leaves a lasting impression.
Colvin Run Mill is opened every day from 11 am until 4 pm, except for Tuesdays. Grinding demonstrations are only available on the first and third Sundays from April through October. Hours are only from noon until 3 pm; and this depends upon conditions being perfect for grinding. School and scout programs are available. Appointments must be made well ahead of scheduled date. Teaching children the early history of Virginia and Fairfax County is easy when they visit the Colvin Run Mill; the mill brings history to life!
