The Freeman House Store and Museum was placed on the Virginia Landmarks Register in 2011. This Vienna, VA landmark is the only building in town that is on this prestigious register. In 2012, the Freeman House Store and Museum was listed in the National Register of Historic Places.
The Freeman House History
Built in 1859, the Freeman House Store was originally called Lydecker Store, and it remained a general store until sometime in the 1920s. During the Civil War, the store served as the post office and was used by troops from the Confederate and Union armies. In 1969, Leon Freeman's daughter, Dorothy, sold the building to the town of Vienna. Leon Freeman, the first president of the Vienna Volunteer Fire Department, was also a prominent figure in town. Vienna wanted to honor him, and others who played a role in shaping the town. Renovations followed this purchase; these restorations were finished in time for a grand re-opening during our country's Bicentennial celebrations.
Open Wednesday through Sunday from 12 noon until 4 pm, the Freeman House Store and Museum offers visitors a chance to get to know and understand the great people that made this part of Virginia thrive. The many exhibits will keep guests wandering for a while, lost in the past, and 'how it used to be'. The Freeman House Store gives most visitors something they have never experienced before: a visit to a charming general store. The store is designed to resemble general stores from bygone days. Visitors are encouraged to browse, as new items are constantly added to the shelves. Don't forget to pick up some old-fashioned candy for the kids!
