Established in 1774 as Alexandria’s first volunteer fire company, the Friendship Fire Company has a long history of fighting fires, including several big blazes during the late 1800’s and early 1900’s. Today, visitors are invited to the Friendship Firehouse Museum at the Friendship Fire Company, which continues to serve as a working firehouse, despite being built in 1855. It did undergo extensive renovations in the 1990’s.
Friendship Fire Company Museum
Located at 107 S. Alfred St. in Alexandria, the museum at the Friendship Fire Company is situated within the firehouse and gives the public the opportunity to explore the company’s extensive history. The museum includes preserved equipment and vehicles, including the Prettyman Hose Carriage (built in 1858) and the Rogers Suction Engine (built in 1851), as well as stories from the past that are brought to life through hands-on exhibits at the Friendship Fire Company.
Throughout the year Friendship Fire Company plans a variety of special activities, including the annual Friendship Firehouse Festival, a free event held the first Saturday in August. The festival includes specials exhibits, free tours, food served by nearby restaurants, and local vendors selling a variety of items, such as homemade jellies and arts & crafts.
