George Mason's Gunston Hall is located on Gunston Road in Mason Neck, VA and pays tribute to the man who drafted Virginia's Declaration of Rights in 1776. George Mason's democratic ideals are still being upheld today. 2016 marks the 240th anniversary of the ratification of these rights. A celebration is planned at Gunston Hall throughout the year.
George Mason’s Gunston Hall Tours
Every visitor starts their tour of George Mason’s Gunston Hall with a film about the life and times of George Mason. From here, visitors are taken on their guided tour, or they can stroll through the many exhibits that highlight the civil career of George Mason, as well as the influences he had on drafting The Virginia Declaration of Rights. Other exhibits focus of his personal life, and the way he survived on his 18th century plantation.
To the east of George Mason’s Gunston Hall there is a group of reconstructed outbuildings that would have been in daily use during George Mason's life. Visitors can visit the dairy, kitchen, laundry, and smokehouse, and the area where the slaves were housed. A reconstructed well sits on the same foundation as the well that was in use when Mason was alive.
Gardens of Gunston Hall
Whether enjoying a guided tour, or just strolling around the grounds at their leisure, visitors cannot miss the beauty of George Mason’s Gunston Hall and its surrounding areas. Some of the gardens date back to the 18th century, planted during Mason's days on the plantation. Guests can enjoy a great view of the mighty Potomac River from a garden overlook, or they can hike down to the river bank for a more up close and personal experience of the rushing water. The Mason family's well-kept graveyard is also located near the main house.
Opened year round, except for New Year's Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas, George Mason's Gunston Hall is affordable for the whole family. Ticket prices are under $10. per person, varying by ages, and depending on whether or not you are planning to take the tour, or just stroll the grounds. The park closes every night at 6 pm. Tours are scheduled until 4:30 pm and normally last about an hour. Many visitors enjoy their tour and then spend the day wandering the grounds. There is just so much to see and do at George Mason's Gunston Hall; visitors leave happy, thrilled with their step back in time.
