Beside the main mansion, there are many other areas to tour: over a dozen outbuildings where meat curing, laundry, and spinning were performed; over 6 acres of gardens and grounds filled with an abundance of fruits, vegetables, and flowers; the breeding area where some of the same breeds of animals as Washington raised are still being bred and cared for; Washington's family tomb where George, Martha and many other family members rest eternally; and the Slave Memorial and Burial Ground - located just 50 yards from Washington's tomb - where slaves and free black workers are buried in unmarked graves.

Other attractions located near George Washington's Mount Vernon are: the Pioneer Farm where Washington experimented with different farming techniques and first practiced crop rotation. George Washington's Distillery & Gristmill where rye whiskey was distilled and flour and cornmeal was ground. The Shops at Mount Vernon offer guests reproductions of some of George Washington's Mount Vernon's finest treasures, including both games and colonial toys for children. The nearby Potomac River offers both tours and a relaxing atmosphere for those who just want to rest after hours spent touring George Washington's Mount Vernon.
