Along the powerful Potomac River, Great Falls Park meanders along the riverbanks, offering visitors a variety of vantage points to stop and marvel at the river. Guests can easily walk from the Visitor's Center to any of the three overlooks in 5 to 10 minutes. The overlooks at Great Falls Park can only be reached by foot, and each offers a spectacular vantage point to see the Great Falls.

Overlook Great Falls Park

Overlook 1 at Great Falls Park offers the closest vantage point. Guests can hike down a short trail and rest on the dirt viewing platform. Adventurous souls can climb over some rocks for a better view. Visitors should note that access beyond fences is prohibited, and caution should always be exercised when climbing on the rocks.

Overlook 2 is down the trail a bit further. Here, guests can see almost all of the waterfall. There is a staircase and a ramp leading to this viewing platform, making it ideal for those who have a physical handicapped to enjoy the beauty of the Potomac River.

Overlook 3 is also handicapped accessible across a wooden footbridge. This overlook offers the best place to view the Great Falls. There is a high water mark pole located to the left of the viewing platform that shows how high flood waters once rose. There are two different platforms at this overlook, both offering fantastic views of the raging falls.

Natural Beauty

One nice thing about Great Falls Park is that it is a 'no trash' park. This means there are no trash cans anywhere in the park, and visitors are strongly urged to take out all trash they bring into the park. It is up to everyone to keep this park looking like the natural beauty that it truly is. Great Falls Park is a great family destination, hopefully it stays that way for future generations.
