The Marine Corps War Memorial (occasionally referred to as the Iwo Jima Memorial) is located in Arlington, VA’s Arlington Ridge Park. Constructed and opened to the public in 1954, this monument honors all Marines who died while fighting for the United States since 1775. The statue shows one of the most famous moments of World War II and was sculpted based on an iconic photo captured by Joe Rosenthal, a photographer for the Associated Press.
Iwo Jima Memorial Statue
The statue at the Iwo Jima Memorial depicts a life-size image of the six men (five Marines and a U.S. Navy hospital corpsman) who raised the American flag atop Mount Suribachi on Iwo Jima, a Pacific island, on February 23, 1945. To capture the men’s facial details, the three survivors posed for the sculptor, Felix W. de Weldon, while photos of the three who perished in battle were also used. A cloth U.S. flag sits atop the 60 ft. bronze flagpole and constantly flies. Inscribed on the statue are the names and dates of crucial Marine engagements, as well as a quote from Fleet Adm. Chester W. Nimitz honoring all those who fought at Iwo Jima. Throughout the summer months, drum and bugle performances, referred to as Sunset Parades, are held by the U.S. Marine Corps on Tuesday evenings at the Iwo Jima Memorial.
