While there are buildings within the Smithsonian American Art Museum complex that may be closed for renovations, there are plenty that have recently been updated and are now open to the public. The National Historic Landmark and The Renwick Gallery have recently been renovated. The Renwich Gallery houses some of the best decorative art and craft objects dating back to the 19th century all the way through present day. The museum is open every day of the year (except December 25th) from 11:30 am until 7:00 pm. Renwick Gallery is opened the same days, but opens at 10 am and closes at 5:50 pm. Admission is totally free.
Traveling Exhibits
The Smithsonian American Art Museum has a traveling exhibition program that has been running since 1951. During renovations of the main building from 2000-2005, the museum visited 105 American cities to showcase the artwork. The Smithsonian American Art Museum continues to tour the country, constantly adding exhibitions and cities to their agenda.
