The Smithsonian Anacostia Community Museum was created to help people better understand contemporary issues related to urban living. The museum helps people develop strong community ties while learning about the constantly changing realities and concepts that come with living in urban areas. Preserving the past and present, and helping to shape the future is what the Smithsonian Anacostia Community Museum is all about.
Smithsonian Anacostia Community Museum Activities
Located in Washington, DC, the Smithsonian Anacostia Community Museum offers free admission and parking every day (except December 25th) from 10 am until 5 pm. The museum offers a wide variety of activities for people of all ages. Involvement in all activities is free (unless stated otherwise), and is encouraged. Everything from quilt making to education talks, to films - and so much more - is offered for folks of all ages. Young children, teens, parents, grandparents, and those without children, will all find something wonderful to explore at the Smithsonian Anacostia Community Museum.
Working closely with local communities, the Smithsonian Anacostia Community Museum has created - and will continue to create - a wide variety of powerful exhibits. Local artists, families, businesses, officials, activists, and organizations collaborate on what should become a part of the museum. Current exhibits include a look at artists who met every week from 1963-1965 to talk about their works, the politics of the day, and civil rights. Another shows the changes in society from 1963-1975. The final exhibit discusses how to build a great community, whether that community is in the United States or in Panama. There is an online exhibition entitled: All The Stories Are True: African American Writers Speak. This exhibit includes true stories as written, or told, by African American people from all walks of life.
The Smithsonian Anacostia Community Museum also offers a traveling exhibition about the hardships people from Africa endured on their way to America. The exhibit highlights their music and language through the use of photographs, banners, objects and framed images. Everything one needs to display this exhibit is included in the package. Libraries or other institutions may book the exhibit for 12 week periods.

The vast amount of cultural materials and artifacts - from some of the most historical times in our country - contained in this building will leave a long-lasting effect upon all visitors.
