Visiting the Pentagon is a must when you live near or visit the Arlington, VA area. Located in Arlington and spanning 34 acres, the Pentagon serves as the U.S. Department of Defense headquarters. More than 23,000 employees, both civilian and military, are involved in the planning and execution of the country’s defense and can be found at the Pentagon on any given day.
Visiting the Pentagon and Taking Tours
First opened on January 15, 1943, the Pentagon has undergone extensive renovations over the years, which includes the installation of protection initiatives incited by the September 11, 2001 terrorist attack.
Free tours are available when visiting the Pentagon, though they must be requested within a specific time frame. Tours typically last 60 minutes and detail the Department of Defense’s mission, as well as the purpose of each of its branches of service. The tour takes visitors over a 1.5 mile route and includes stops at various displays that highlight the military’s most significant moments in history.
If you plan to tour the Pentagon, be aware that there is no public parking available. Visitors are encouraged to take the Metro or park at the Pentagon City Mall.
