This is the third post in a four-part blog series going into the specifics of how my wife and I successfully fixed and flipped our first home. Click here to read the second post in this series. I left off with a description of the painting we did, both inside and outside the house. Now, we turn to the landscaping, and believe me, this house had an ugly front and back yard!
New landscaping
We had a small front and back yard that hardly got any sun and hadn’t been maintained at all in the last few years, so it was basically just a dirt lot. We bought new mulch and stones and got creative with designing a beautiful front and back yard that required minimal maintenance. This job required a few trips to Lowes, as well as use of their rental pick-up truck, which just costs about $20 for an hour and 15 minutes, plus some extra cash for every 15 minutes of rental time you use. We bought about 80 bags of brown mulch, 40 bags of cheap drainage rocks, 25 plants from Lowes’ clearance section, one concrete bench, one wood bench, some inexpensive hanging plants, and some cheap but beautiful Impatients.
We placed mulch all around the house, planted flowers all over the front and back yard, and created scenic pathways among the mulch with the rocks. We also created a sizeable rock area in the back where we placed a black metal fire pit that we bought from Lowes for about $130. Combined with our patio furniture and grill, all of this made for some beautifully staged landscaping that only took one very long Saturday to accomplish. The best part was that it ended up being very inexpensive.
