Neighborhood
Ballston itself was named after the Ball family, who established a main tavern in the early 1800's, with the main community intersection beginning as Birch's Crossroads and then becoming Ball's crossroad where the intersection of Wilson Boulevard and North Glebe Road currently sits. The intersection became a focal point at around 1740, when two main roads started to develop, one coming from what is now Alexandria to the mouth of Pimmit Run, and the other road coming from Awbury's Ferry to the Falls Church. By 1900 a well defined village had developed that was named Central Ballston.
