History And American Tradition In Fort Belvoir, VAFort Belvoir

Fort Belvoir is a United States Army installation in Fairfax County with a population of 8,209. This area serves both as an important area for the US military and as the largest employer in Fairfax County.

The history of this area dates back to the site of the Belvoir plantation, where the Fairfax family (the namesake of Fairfax County) once lived. The military post itself dates back to World War I, and was formerly known as Camp A.A. Humphreys, after a Union Civil War General. It was renamed Fort Belvoir in the 1930s, but still hosts the US Army Corps of Engineers’ Humphreys Engineer Center.
