A Little Occoquan History

The name “Occoquan” comes from a word in the Algonquian Doeg Indians' language and it means "at the end of the water". That’s because the town is on the Occoquan River and it was home to a group of indigenous people. Much the same as the British colonists who moved there after them, they were heavily reliant on the river for not only fish to eat but also for trade and transportation, 

In the 1600s

Way back in the early 1600s Captain John Smith was busy sailing and exploring the Occoquan River. And later, 1608 was the year when the first Europeans arrived in the Northern Virginia area. At that time, the Tauxenent tribe (aka the "Dogues" as the English called them ) had their main village located right at the mouth of the river. This particular Indian tribe had a closer association with their neighbours who didn’t even speak their language ( like the Piscataway in Maryland on the other side of the Potomac River) than they did with any of the other Algonquian-speaking tribes to their south. 

The 1700s

By the year 1765, the Anglo-American colonists had managed to establish an Occoquan industrial settlement that contained tobacco warehouses and grist mills. In fact, the very first automated grist mill in the country was in operation for 175 years there and was called The Merchant's Mill until it was later destroyed by a fire.

A Thriving Town

Today the town of Occoquan is thriving and has become an amazing artists' community. It offers locals and visitors alike a wealth of shops, ghost walks, a town boat dock, outdoor dining with amazing views, and so much more. Numerous structures in town (many of them in the commercial area downtown), are important parts of the Occoquan Historic District, which is listed in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). Rockledge (former home to the town's founder), is even listed in the NRHP as a "significant structure".

Transportation

The main access to Occoquan town Condos is via Virginia State Route 123. You’ll find that SR 123 goes northbound to the famous Route 66 and southbound to I-95. Other picturesque local roads provide easy access to the neighbouring areas of unincorporated Prince William County.
