Shirlington Area
The neighborhood surrounding the Arlington condos is Shirlington, which is referred to as an urban village and sits in the southern part of the county, adjacent to Fairlington. The area of Shirlington is named for the Shirley Highway (Interstate 395) and Arlington.
It has been labeled as Arlington's Arts and Entertainment District, with its mixed use developments that have an urban feel. Within a close proximity of the Potomac River, residents of Shirlington enjoy a small village vibe with the hustle and bustle D.C. as well as the tranquility of nature nearby.
Shirlington started off as a shopping center in 1944 to service the nearby areas of Parkfairfax and Fairlington. In the 1980's a partial renovation of Shirlington took place to create a traditional Main Street that ran along South 28th Street, now known as Campbell Avenue.
Shirlington remained small until the county authorities gave it some attention in 2000, with nearly 1,000,000 square feet of mixed use development was planned. There was an emphasis on making the area pedestrian friendly.
