Falls Church itself has a rich history that dates back to the late 16th century, when it was still part of the land owned by the Anacostian. During the late 17th century, English settlers moved to the area from the Tidewater area of Virginia becoming the first European settlement in the immediate area of today's Falls Church.
The town took its name from an 18th century Anglican parish, named Falls Church, which didn't gain its township status until 1875. Fall's Church was like many of Virginia's colonial settlements, in that it began with large land holdings that were sub-divided into small farms. The 1800's saw an influx of workers come to the area when the capital moved from Philadelphia to Washington DC, with many taverns opening to serve travelers going back and forth to the federal district. The Civil War saw Falls Church taken over by the Confederate army with military encampments setup on Upton and Minor's Hills.
Falls Church remained a rural farm community after reconstruction, and gained its township status in 1875. By the 1900's Falls Church became the largest town in Farifax County, with the town becoming a center of culture and commerce. The area is home to a sizable Vietnamese American community today.
