You’ll find many older communities built in the 1940s and 1950s, and typically these are garden style communities where you can walk up to your unit. Some of these units have entrances directly from the outside. Most of these older communities have brick exteriors, which is consistent with the colonial architecture so common in many areas of Northern Virginia, especially in communities that are closer to Washington, D.C.
